You’ve had the idea for years. You’ve put together a business plan, found the right premises and hired the best people for the job. You don’t need someone else to come in and tell you what to do. Do you?
You’re Too Close
Sometimes the best way to find a solution to a problem that’s resisting your best efforts is to get an outside perspective. In your personal life, you’d talk about something that was troubling you with a trusted friend. If you were ill, you’d go to a doctor. In business, you have the option of hiring someone with precisely the expertise you need to address the problem you have.
Consultants work with many different companies, and have the advantage of knowing that other companies have faced the problems you may be facing and found solutions. To them, it is not as personal and they have a new perspective on the problem.
This is counterintuitive but if you need staff for a specific project or to deal with a specific issue it may well be cheaper to hire a consultancy firm to work on it than to take on new full time staff. As you long as you are specific with your consultancy agreement, the consultants are outside staff and so don’t require the same benefits as someone you’re employing directly. They move around frequently and engage with lots of different jobs, so they will be used to the steep learning curve the situation requires, and when the specific problem is solved and the project completed, you can simply dispense with their services.
While their upfront fees may be costly, in the long term this can be a very wise economic move and will also allow your existing staff to focus on your core-business operations, so you can re-organise your business without interfering with its day to day running.
Sometimes when you’re running a company, you need to make difficult decisions and because they affect people you’ve worked closely with for a long time, it’s hard to do what needs to be done.
If you get a consultant to help you reorganise your business, you can be sure they are giving you impersonal advice founded on their business experience, and if you need to downsize, they can even conduct this process for you.
